Master's Recital: My Family Drum

On May 15, 2025, alongside 11 of my closest friends & colleagues at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, I unveiled My Family Drum. Dedicated to my teachers, this recital explored both the educational lineages that shaped Longy's institutional development and those that shaped my own musical development. Different chapters explored the different lineages shown on the Alaska Native-style drum pictured behind the stage (designed by Gidinatiy Hartman, used with permission from the First Alaskans Institute). While at Longy, I was frequently inspired and awe-struck while studying North American Indigenous composers, especially so by the ways these composers choose to represent and incorporate their cultures in classically-notated music. For fellow musicians, I hope this recital can serve as an example on how to bring more music by Indigenous composers into recital programs.
